What excitement at the Bob Devaney Sports Center!!
The Elkhorn Girls Basketball Team defeated the Norris Titans in an overtime thriller during the First Round of the State Basketball Tournament. The Antlers advance to the State semifinals Friday night with a 22-1 record while the Titans end the year with a 15-8 record.
Elkhorn will take on Holdrege at 8:45 p.m. at the Devaney Sports Center. Holdrege comes into the matchup with a 22-3 mark. Come on out and make some noise in Lincoln!
Against Norris, the Titans jumped out to a 10-6 first quarter lead and extended the margin to 19-12 with 2:22 left in the second quarter. That's when Brittney Lynch scored in the paint and Cathleen Cox followed with a 3-pointer to cut the margin to 19-17. After a steal on the press, Lynch fed Sara Ritzdorf for a layup just before the half to tie the contest at 19-19.
Elkhorn dominated the third quarter as good playmaking from Miner and Ritzdorf lead to baskets from Cox, Lynch, Courtney Jensen and Brooke Bartosh. Contributions from Maggie Baumert and Crystal Foster had Elkhorn ahead 32-22 late in the quarter. Miner's tough defense took Norris' leading scorer Samantha Areman out of the action and Norris could only muster 3 points until Tori Simpson banked in a 3-pointer to end the half and cut the margin to 32-25 to start the fourth quarter.
But Elkhorn continued to pull away and lead 38-27 with a little over 2 minutes left in the game when Norris made a frantic run. The Titans scored three 3-pointers and a field goal to tie the game at 38 . . . the last one coming from Areman over the outstretched arm of the Antler defender with 17 seconds left.
After a timeout, Elkhorn came down court and missed a 17 footer that rolled out of bounds off of a Norris player with 1.5 seconds left. An inbounds pass to Lynch lead to contact but no foul as the game moved into overtime.
Jensen won the tip and Cox got the Antlers back on top with a driving layup. After a defensive stop, Lynch got a layup and Elkhorn lead 42-38. Elkhorn still had that lead and used up some clock before a turnover lead to a Titan layup to make the score 42-40. It was still that way when Ritzdorf was fouled and stepped to the line with 27 seconds left. She calmly sank both free throws to put the Antlers on top 44-40.
After a foul shot cut the margin to 44-41, Cox was fouled with 12 seconds left. She also made both free throws and when Bryant scored for Norris with 3 seconds left, the Titans had no timeouts and could only watch the clock tick off as Elkhorn did not inbound the ball. The Antlers ran to the bench and embraced each other with the 46-43 State Tournament victory in hand.
It will be another tough battle tonight at the Devaney. Come on out and support the girls . . . and support Elkhorn.
